In 1985, Congress authorized the US Mint to produce the American Eagle, a 22-karat gold coin (a durable alloy of gold, silver and copper), to be mined from USA gold; the weight and gold content guaranteed by the U.S. government. Starting in 1986, Gold Eagles have been exclusively minted at West Point, N.Y., issued in four denominations:
1/10 troy ounce gold content: $5 face value
1/4 troy ounce gold content: $10 face value
1/2 troy ounce gold content: $25 face value
1 troy ounce gold content: $50 face value
Since their inception, Eagles have retained their place as one of the world’s most popular gold bullion coins.
